First edition, the dedication copy. Nau (1766-1845), was professor of natural history at the University of Mainz and, later, a high government official. He was also conservator of the mineralogical collection at Munich. Nau has divided this work into 773 chapters, describing every aspect of mining. He gives much bibliographical detail on early and contemporary books concerned with mining, metallurgy, surveying, geology, etc. Fine and handsome copy. Rare; not in N.U.C. This book is dedicated to Georg Karl von Fechenbach (1749-1808), the last Prince Bishop of Würzburg and, from 1805, Bishop of Bamberg. Georg Karl is the best-known member of an ancient and distinguished German family which traces its origins to the early 14th century. The bishop's court at Würzburg was known as a cultural and musical center in the 18th century and Georg Karl encouraged the court orchestra during his reign. Elected at a critical time, Georg Karl administered the diocese during the Napoleonic wars and negotiated its secularization in 1802. With his engraved bookplate "G.C. von Fechenbach."
