NAVIER, Claude Louis Marie Henri.

On the Means of Comparing the Respective Advantages of Different Lines of Railway and on the Use of Locomotive Engines.

Translated from the French...by John Macneill, Civil Engineer. xv, [2]-97 pp. 8vo, cont. green marbled boards (well-rebacked in calf). London: Roake & Varty, 1836. First edition in English and the only work of the great French engineer to be translated into that language. "In his translation of this work by Navier, MacNeill provides a scientific basis and formulae for determining the most the most economical and efficient route for a railway line. In his introduction, MacNeill refers to Tredgold's Treatise on Railways and to Wood's Practical Treatise on Railways, but finds Tredgold's information antiquated and the tables presented by Wood inadequate. He praises Navier's formulae for allowing the user to 'approximate very nearly to a correct comparison between two lines of Rail-way,' attributing their superiority to Navier's skill as a mathematician...Following the July Revolution, Navier served as a consultant to the state on technical matters concerning transportation, including policy for 'laying out a national railway system.' In the text he discusses the principal elements involved in the comparison of different railway lines, the power required, the weight which can be drawn, the variations in the motion of the train on ascending and descending slopes, and provides a summary with a comparative estimate of the cost of transit on different railway lines."Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, p. 235. Macneill (1793-1880), was one of the principal assistants of Telford and was much involved with the improvement of turnpike roads and railways. Fine copy. Ex Bibliotheca Mechanica.
