Added engraved title, four engraved plates (two folding), & numerous woodcut illus. in the text. 4 p.l. (incl. the added engr. title), 348 pp. 4to, cont. fine vellum over boards. Uppsala: J. Jansson, 1654. First edition of this interesting book on the boats and ships, designed for warfare, of ancient Greece and Rome. The author describes navigation techniques, methods of construction, armaments, decorative elements, crew requirements, etc. Scheffer (1621-79), was professor of eloquence and political philosophy at Uppsala and is considered by Sandys to be the true founder of classical philology in Sweden. "His illustrated treatises on the ships, the carriages, and even necklaces of the ancients, are in good repute."­Sandys, II, p. 368. The handsome plates and woodcuts depict many kinds of ships. A very fine copy with the ownership inscription of Joseph von Lassberg, the German scholar and bibliophile on the free front endpaper. From the library of His Serene Highness the Prince Fürstenberg at Donaueschingen with the usual stamp on verso of title.
