First edition of the best bio-bibliographical source for Whewell. Todhunter covers Whewell's scientific and scholarly work and includes a large collection of his letters. The author finished his biography of Herschel's old friend five years after Herschel's own death and the book is presented to his widow. Presentation copy, inscribed to "M.B. Herschel" "From the Author" at head of both half-titles, with Lady Herschel's book-label on front free end-paper of Vol. I and with the Collingwood stamp on both titles and head of the first page of text in each volume. With extensive notes in pencil on rectos of both rear free end-papers and briefer notes on verso of front free end-paper of Vol. I and on final advertisement in Vol. II. Fine set.
