First edition and very rare with no copy in N.U.C., OCLC, or RLIN; this is the author's first book. Wiebeking (1762-1842), hydraulic engineer and architect, was a high government official charged with overseeing waterway, bridge and road construction in several states of Germany. He worked in Düsseldorf, Darmstadt, Vienna, and Munich and was the author of a number of books on bridge and road building and other aspects of civil engineering. This work is, in large part, concerned with the problem of improving the navigability of the Rhine and Sieg rivers in order to allow larger ships access to the rivers. There is a great deal of theoretical discussion with frequent references to Bernoulli, Guglielmini, Euler, Vauban, Silberschlag, and others. Pages 156-200 are devoted to the merits of overshot versus undershot watermills for milling corn. The attractive plates depict specific plans for taming the Rhine between Bonn and Cologne and other river taming projects along the Rhine and Sieg. Fine and handsome copy.
