"In 1816 Douglas brought out the first edition of his work on military bridges, which is said to have furnished Telford with the idea of the suspension principle in bridge construction."­D.N.B., V, p. 1204. Douglas (1776-1861), had a truly eventful and adventurous life: he was a soldier, scientist, sailor, professor and theoretician of military science, governor of New Brunswick, M.P., etc. (see D.N.B. for more on this fascinating and varied man). The attractive lithographed plates depict various kinds of bridges including a primitive suspension bridge and numerous pontoon bridges. Fine and pretty copy from the library of Archduke Charles, the nephew and adoptive heir of Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen with a note that this is a duplicate from the Albertina Library in Vienna. The English edition and our French edition are both scarce books.
