First edition of Eble's continuation -- in fact, the final volumes --of Kurt Polycarp Joachim Sprengel's Versuch einer pragmatischen Geschichte der Arzneikunde, "his most important publication...it became the standard work on the subject for nearly a century...he [stressed] the connections between medicine and contemporary cultural and philosophical forces."­D.S.B., XII, p. 591. Sprengel (1766-1833), professor of botany and medicine at the University of Halle, was viewed in the first part of the 19th century as the most prestigious professor in Germany. His reputation was principally the result of his erudite and detailed publications in medical history and botany. Eble (1799-39), was a Austrian military physician who undertook to complete Sprengel's great work. Fine set. Half-titles lacking.
