ELLET, Charles.

The Army of the Potomac, and its Mismanagement; Respectfully addressed to Congress.

19 pp. 8vo, orig. self-wrappers (some careful repairs). Washington: 1861. First edition of this pamphlet which caused a sensation when published. Ellet (1810-62), the "Brunel of America," offers here scathing criticism of General McClellan's competency. "The pamphlet was a forthright exposé of blunders of the high command, which, although unsparing, was impersonal: Ellet knew McClellan could never win the war and gave the reasons why...The remedy, according to Ellet, was to allow McClellan to stay in Washington and defend the thirty-two fortifications around the area. Let McClellan have his daily reviews and parades, but permit the other generals to command groups of approximately 10,000 each and attack at different places."Lewis, Charles Ellet, Jr. The Engineer as Individualist, pp. 180-81. Fine copy preserved in a box. Ex Bibliotheca Mechanica. D.A.B., III, pp. 87-88.
