EVANS, Anthony Walton White.

Letter of W.W. Evans, Civil Engineer, to the Comptroller, on Plan of Bulkheads and Docks for the City of New York.

25 pp. 8vo, modern blue wrappers. New York: M.B. Brown, 1881. First edition and very rare with no copy in N.U.C., OCLC, or RLIN. Evans (1817-86), civil engineer, was responsible for the design and construction of numerous important railroads in South America, New Zealand, and Egypt. He was also known for the successful building of bridges across several torrential rivers in Chile. In the present work, Evans comes out against the coffer dam system proposed by John E. Walsh for the construction of a bulkhead along the docks of Manhattan; Evans makes a series of his own recommendations. "I have often thought...why poor, old, played-out Syracuse, in Sicily, shows that she had better and greater wharves and piers two thousand years ago than New York ever dreamed of having."p. 21. Fine copy. Preserved in a box. Ex Bibliotheca Mechanica. D.A.B., III, p. 195.
