FAIRBAIRN, William.

On the Application of Cast and Wrought Iron to Building Purposes.

Lithographic tinted frontis., illus. in the text (several full-page), one folding printed table, & two folding lithographed plates. viii, 183 pp. 8vo, orig. blue blindstamped cloth (minor foxing), spine gilt. London: J. Weale, 1854. First edition of one of the key works in the development of the use of iron in buildings. This is a fine presentation copy, inscribed on the free front endpaper: "The Royal Society of Edinburgh with the Author's Compliments." Fairbairn (1789-1874), "presents the practical knowledge of his time concerning the use of iron and its combination with other materials in the construction of fire-proof buildings. Among the elements discussed are cast-iron beams and girders, wrought-iron beams, and trellis girders, with Fairbairn's recommendation of the use of wrought-iron beams and joists over cast-iron. The book was popular among engineers, largely because of the experimental data on strength of materials."Roberts & Trent, Bibliotheca Mechanica, p. 113. The handsome frontispiece depicts the Saltaire Mills near Bradford. Fine copy. Ex Bibliotheca Mechanica.
