FERREL, William.

"The Motions of Fluids and Solids on the Earth's Surface," Professional Papers of the Signal Service. No. VIII. Illus. in the text. 51 pp. Large 4to, orig. printed wrappers. Washington: Office of the Chief Signal Officer, 1882. The reprint of Ferrel's most significant paper (1st appearance: 1858-60), in which he enunciated his general quantitative theory of relative motion on the earth's surface and applied it to winds and currents. Ferrel's law states "that if a body is moving in any direction, there is a force, arising from the earth's rotation, which always deflects it to the right in the northern hemisphere, and to the left in the southern." "After Laplace, Ferrel was the chief founder of the subject now known as geophysical fluid dynamics. He gave the first general formulation of the equations of motion for a body moving with respect to the rotating earth and drew from them the consequences for atmospheric and oceanic circulation. He contributed to meteorological and tidal theory and to the problem of 'earth wobble'."D.S.B., IV, p. 590. Fine copy. Ex Bibliotheca Mechanica.
