FEYENS, Thomas.

Libri Chirurgici XII. De praecipuis Artis Chirurgicae controversiis...

Opera posthuma Hermanni Congringii cura nunc primum edita. Title within elaborate engraved border. 6 p.l. (incl. engraved title), 108 pp. Small 4to, cont. sheep (spine repaired, some browning & foxing due to the quality of the paper). Frankfurt: T.M. Goez, 1669 [i.e.1649]. First edition of this very rare collection of the surgical writings of Thomas Feyens (1567-1631), professor of medicine at the University of Louvain. This book was posthumously published by Hermann Conring, professor of medicine at Helmstadt, with an interesting dedication letter by him to the Swedish Royal Counselor J.N. Lilieström, and a letter by Feyens to Conring, dated 24 January 1629. The book is divided into twelve sections, including two on eye operations, one on tracheotomy, one on lithotomy, and another on hernia. The final section is a treatise on rhinoplastic operations in nine chapters. Feyens had studied at the University of Bologna in 1590-93 where he witnessed Tagliacozzi's operations. Very good copy. Gnudi & Webster, Tagliacozzi, pp. 270-71(erroneously dating this book "1602 "). Hirsch, II, p. 512. Zeis, Plastische Chirurgie, 54"Im Uebrigen ist die Abhandlung eine der besseren aus jener Zeit."
