New York: George P. Putnam & Co., 1854. First edition, second printing with the title-page cancel correcting the number of illustrations to 20. INSCRIBED by Webber to Alfred W. Street. Inscribed by the Author 8vo., pp. xi, 347. Inscribed on front free endpaper "To Master Alfred W. Street / From the author / C.W. Webber". 20 vibrantly coloured chromolithographs with tissue guards, (15 of birds and flowers, drawn by Mrs. Webber, and 5 of Native American Indian scenes painted by Alfred Jacob Miller, "who lived among Native Americans and painted them beyond the bounds of civilization ... a young painter who went to Wyoming in 1837 ... . The plates were executed by one of the first chromolithographers in Philadelphia, Louis Rosenthal.") A very early example of the "new art", American chromolithography. Some offsetting to the text and tissue guards at the plates, else interior clean, and bright. Orig. red cloth with ornate gilt decorations to both upper and lower covers, and to spine strip, bevelled boards, all edges gilt, orig. clean, yellow coated endpapers. Head and tail of spine expertly repaired, new endbands added, hinge at first gathering repaired and resewn, spine gilt somewhat faded or dulled, else handsome copy of this rare collectible.
