Unnumbered Trade edition 1962, Original Cloth Octavo (approx. 1 cm shorter than crested edition), pp. cii, 410, xv, large folded map at rear, original red buckram, gilt spine lettering (uncrested). Previous owner's ink signature to front free endpaper else, near fine, bright and clean copy. 'Part I covers Thompson's experiences and travels in the service of Hudson's Bay Company and North West Company in the country east of the Rockies between 1784 and 1807. Part II covers the years 1807 to 1812 in detail. Thompson wrote the manuscript about 1847, many years after he had left the West.' Peel (3) 78; 'Most important contribution to Western history and exploration published in the twentieth century. Thompson's operations on the Upper Columbia and Spokane rivers, in 1807, gave color to England's Oregon claims.' Howes T-192. Thompson wrote his jounal, 1784-1812, but it remained unpublished until the Tyrrell Champlain Society edition of 1916.
