"The designation given the family of languages treated of in this bibliography is based upon the name of a tribe living near the mouth of the Columbia River, from whom a vocabulary was obtained by Gabriel Franchere, of the Pacific Fur Company, about 1812, and published in his "Relation" in 1820, under the name Chinouque ou Tchinouk." - anglicezed to Chinook. - from the Preface.
