Boston Joseph Knight Company 1896, First US Edition Octavo (19 cm x 14 cm), pp. xiii, 276, illustrated half-title, frontispiece, colour illustrated title-page, approximately 139 half-tone illustrations and decorations by Prendergast, some with red highlights, terra cotta coloured cloth, title-page illustration reproduced on front cover and stamped in black, green and pink, gilt cover and spine titles, top edge gilt, black coated endpapers. Faint, purple stamp on title-page: "Property of American Merchant Marine Library Association / an image of a sailing vessel / Give the Next Man a Chance to Read", no other library markings, previous owner's inked name and date to front blank, otherwise text clean and crisp; covers lightly dust soiled, spine slightly darkened, spine ends and tips just starting, endpapers split at front hinge and cracking at half-title. Overall, a very good, square copy. Prendergast (1858-1924), was born in St. John's, Newfoundland but grew up in Boston.
