First edition. 8vo., pp. 8 (Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown advts. inserted), xvi, 339, orig. paper boards, cloth spine, spine label, t.e. only trimmed. Armorial bookplate of Sir William Middleton. Scuffed, endpapers foxed, minor foxing else; contents crisp and clean. Howison, 1797-1859, toured Lower Canada on his way to Upper Canada where he practiced medicine in the Niagara region, 1818-20. He was an acute and critical observer and the Sketches went into three editions and was translated into German. It is regarded as one of the best eye-witness accounts of the period.
