London John Van Voorst 1850, First Edition Original Cloth Octavo (20 cm x 13 cm), pp. viii, 152, tinted litho frontis. view of the 'Devil's Thumb', folding. map, coated endpapers. Navy blue cloth, blind rules, gilt spine lettering with "Gurney and Jackson" at foot, no adverts at end, later binding of original sheets. Covers very lightly scuffed, half-title and end page darkened as usual by contact with endpapers, else fine, crisp copy. "Narrative of an eight month voyage with Baffin Bay whalers, 1849, undertaken in search of the author's brother, Dr. Harry Goodsir. Goodsir was hired on as Acting Assistant-Surgeon aboard the 'Erebus', but whose real duty was that of naturalist; the government was unwilling to announce the appointment of a salaried naturalist. The author who, like his brother was also a surgeon and former President of the Royal Medical Society of Edinburgh, sailed with William Penney master of the whaler 'Advice'. The narrative describes the whaling vessel's passage through the ice and processes in whaling, the birds obsrved, and the Lancaster Sound region." AB 5919.
