BANNERMAN Illustrated by: NEILL

LITTLE BLACK SAMBO

NEILL BANNERMAN,HELEN. THE STORY OF LITTLE BLACK SAMBO. Chic:Reilly & Lee (Reilly & Britt. (1908). 8vo, blue cloth, pict. paste-on, some cover soil, VG. An early American edition of Little Black Sambo illustrated by J.R. NEILL with color pict. ep's plus 8 full page color illustrations depicting Sambo and his family in less than flattering terms. The second half of the book contains Harriet Beecher Stowe's STORY OF TOPSY with 8 more full page color illustrations. With these depictions, it is easy to see the objections that many have to these stories. (Originally is part of the Children's Red Book Series here called the CHildren's Own Book Series with ads thru Jessica's First Prayer ca 1925). A nice copy of an interesting version of both Sambo and Topsy.
