Harper New York 1849 First Edition BAL 13660. Second state with extended ads, although Schwartz claims the configuration of ads here indicates the first issue. In all only about 4500 copies were printed with about 300 of those destroyed in the 1853 Harper's warehouse fire. Erased signature on the front endpaper. Chipping of spine to text block and heavy spotting of cloth. Marginal old dampstaining throughout. A Good copy of one of Melville's less common titles.
