"Bartleby, The Scrivener, A Story of Wall Street" in PUTNAM'S MONTHLY: Volumes I & II

G. P. Putnam & Co. New York 1853 First Edition Two volumes bound in contemporary half leather and marbled boards covering the entire year of 1853. Both volumes are bound in half morocco and boards with morocco corners, with the first volume in brown morocco and marbled boards and the second volume in black morocco and black boards. Both are in Very Good condition with expected rubbing to the leather and the covers tight. Contents have only light, sporadic foxing. A small section of one page in the second volume has been excised affecting the text of that page which on one side is the conclusion to an article titled "The American Ideal Woman" and the other side is the beginning of an article on Collier's Shakespeare. Contains the first printing of "Bartleby the Scrivener" as well as a lengthy article on Melville by George W. Curtis andthree chapters from Thoreau's EXCURSION TO CANADA. Also contains views of New York City from lost daguerreotypes and articles on the Mormons and Cuba.
