MATTHIESSEN, Peter

UNDER THE MOUNTAIN WALL. A CHRONICLE OF TWO SEASONS IN THE STONE AGE

Viking Press New York (1962) First Edition His third book of nonfiction, a chronicle of the 1961 Harvard-Peabody Expedition to New Guinea. This is the first issue with the photographs bound at the center of the book. Most copies were pulled by the publisher and sold to a book club and are noted as Book Club Editions at the bottom of the Table of Contents. This copy, however, is one of the few that escaped such a fate and is quite scarce as a result, especially in this condition. The dustwrapper has a small crease and resulting short tear at the upper front fore-edge and mild rubbing at various points along the edges. Fine in a Near Fine dustwrapper.
