Octavo, contemporary full brown calf gilt, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, black morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers and edges. $450. Later edition, with engraved frontispiece portrait in Volume I. One of the greatest of the Anglican divines and preachers of the Caroline period, Barrow produced a number of eloquent and influential sermons, which John Locke characterized as "masterpieces of their kind." In addition to the sermons and other works, this set contains Treatise on the Pope's Supremacy, his finest piece of controversialist writing, published posthumously. Gift inscription. Very handsomely bound.
