Document signed (Secretarial)
MARIE ANTOINETTE. Secretarial document, dated Versailles, April 1, 1784. Oblong folio, vellum, one page, measures approximately 19 inches by 13 inches. $800. Fine Marie Antoinette secretarial document, appointing Charles le Merle "Huissier de notre Cuisine Bouche," Usher to the Queen's Table, a member of the Queen's household, replacing Favereau who was dismissed by the Queen. The document is countersigned by Beauregard, the Queen's Chamberlaine, and the left margin contains the text of the oath of fidelity sworn by de Merle, as witnessed by Talavre, an official of her court. An attractive appointment written in a fine secretarial hand, headed in large letters "De Par La Reine," and signed "Marie Antoinette" in a secretarial hand, with the customary arrow drawn from the royal "signature" to that of the secretary below (in this case to Beauregard's signature). Lower corner with slit for attachment of wax seal (not present). A very handsome document.
