L'ECOLE NATIONALE DES BEAUX-ARTS
Medailles des Concours d'Architecture
L'ECOLE NATIONALE DES BEAUX-ARTS. L'École Nationale des Beaux-Arts. Les Médailles des Concours d'Architecture. Paris: A. Guérinet, (1899-1909). Seven volumes. Folio, contemporary beige cloth, red calf labels, marbled endpapers. $1800. Seven folio volumes of over a thousand heliotype elevations, renderings, and floor plans by early 20th-century contest-winners in the École des Beaux-Arts. "The multiplicity of building tasks and the sheer scale of building activity during the 19th century meant that the apprentice method of training architects was no longer adequate. The French had already confronted the problem... and had established the Royal Academy of Architecture in 1671, [which later] became the École des Beaux-Arts, the largest and most influential school of architecture during the 19th century" (Roth, 442-444). This expansive set of prize-winning architectural drawings covers the first decade of the 20th century, and stands as a significant historical resource on the most important architects of the time. This copy bears the signature and spine labels of Baltimore architect Bayard Turnbull, brother of artist Grace Turnbull, and erstwhile landlord of F. Scott Fitzgerald, who in 1932-33 rented the Turnbull summer house near Towson while completing Tender Is the Night. Without volumes for the academic period Fall 1904 to Spring 1906. A fine set, with distinguished provenance.
