JEVONS, William Stanley

Money and the Mechanism of Exchange

JEVONS, William Stanley. Money and the Mechanism of Exchange. London: Henry S. King, 1875. Small octavo, original red cloth. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $2600. First edition of Jevons' "most readable" account of the manufacture, use and regulation of money. "A most readable volume" (DNB), written late in Jevons' life and published as part of The International Scientific Series. "In preparing this volume, I have attempted to write a descriptive essay on the past and present monetary systems of the world, the materials employed to make money, the regulations under which the coins are struck and issued, the natural laws which govern their circulation, the several modes in which they may be replaced by the use of paper documents, and finally, the method in which the use of money is immensely economized by the cheque and clearing system now being extended and perfected" (Preface). Jevons has been described by Stigler as the "forerunner of neo-classical economics," by Marshall as "among the very greatest of economists," and by Schumpeter as "one of the most genuinely original economists who ever lived." Einaudi 3067. Infrequent faint foxing to text, inner hinges expertly repaired, original cloth with only modest rubbing to ends of slightly darkened spine. An extremely good copy.
