JUDAICA

Aegypstische Humoreske

(JUDAICA) (ANTI-SEMITISM) SEYPPEL, Carl Maria. Aegypstische Humoreske: Schlau, Schlauer, am Schlausten; Er-Si-Es; Die Plagen. (Dusseldorf: F. Bagel, 1882-84). Three volumes. Quarto, pictorial burlap-covered boards; uncut; pp. (2), 40; (2), 42; (2), 42. $3500. Rare first editions of Seyppel's three German illustrated anti-Semitic verse parodies of the Biblical Exodus story. Printed on thick paper imitating in color and appearance an ancient damaged papyrus, side-stitched with twine and bound in "aged" burlap decorated with illustrations and seals. Texts printed in black and red; profusely illustrated in an unusual style reminiscent of Aubrey Beardsley and the fin-de-siecle style. Although the works claim to be humorous satires about ancient Egypt, they are actually vicious anti-Semitic caricatures, portraying the Jews as cunning and crafty and the Egyptians as utter fools. The texts are similar to other Biblical satires of the time which would later develop into more serious and virulent anti-Semitic writings. Exceptionally rare; according to the NUC, Cornell University is the only American library possessing all three of these works; the Simon Weisenthal Center also possesses a complete set. Of the individual works, the NUC locates only one other copy of Die Plagen, four other copies of Er-Si-Es, and seven other copies of Schlau, Schlauer, am Schlausten. Some scattered soiling; sewing broken in Er-Si-Es volume; majority of seal lacking from Schlau, Schlauer, am Schlausten binding. An extraordinarily rare collection.
