Together, seven uniformly bound volumes. 12mo, contemporary three-quarter polished tan calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, red and green morocco spine labels, marbled boards, endpapers and edges. $2000. Later Victorian edition of Plato's works, handsomely bound. "Plato is generally regarded as the inventor of philosophical argument as we know it, and many would claim that the depth and range of his thought have never been surpassed" (Blackburn, 289). This edition originally published beginning in 1848. With engraved frontispiece portrait of the philosopher in Volume VII. Interiors generally clean; old, indelible blue pencil annotation to verso of expertly reattached front free endpaper in Volume I. Minor shelf-wear, a few abrasions to calf, light rubbing to spines. A handsome set.
