First edition of this comprehensive account of the history of the city of Bordeaux, richly illustrated with maps and charts, with lengthy description of Bordelaise viticulture, and beautifully bound in morocco-gilt. Contains information on the history, culture, soil, climate, industry, commerce, population, and politics of one of France's greatest cities. Volume I contains a lengthy description of the wine industry in Bordeaux, beginning in the second century A.D. It contains descriptions of all of the greatest wines in the area according to rank, with commerce and trade information. Volume IV is a map volume, with 28 plates, most double-page and with two in color, covering Bordeaux history since Roman times. Text in French. Armorial bookplate, with matching unobtrusive stamps on title pages. Marginalia on one leaf. Original paper wrappers bound in. A fine copy with an exceptionally lovely binding and numerous maps.
