HEBREW BIBLE
Lex Dei Summi nova
(HEBREW BIBLE) HUTTER, Elias. Lex Dei Summi nova; Atque haec est, Novum Domini nostri Jesu Christi Testamentum Sacro-Sanctum; Christianis simul, ac Judais, Sancta Lingua Hebrae a Scriptum & exhibitum; Ab Elia Huttero Germano. Londini: Typis Thomae Roycroft, 1661. Small octavo, 18th-century full black calf gilt, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, gilt-paneled covers, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $4000. The extremely scarce 1661 Hebrew New Testament, the first printed in England (apart from polyglots). One of only 500 copies printed. Handsomely bound in 18th-century paneled calf gilt. Edited by William Robertson and translated by Elias Hutter, Hebrew professor at Leipzig and the editor of the famous 12-volume Polyglot New Testament (1599). Hutter was unable to find a Hebrew version of the New Testament in preparation for his Polyglot, and therefore translated it himself in only one year. "From Hutter's Polyglot, the Hebrew was detached and printed separately, with some corrections, under the superintendence of William Robertson... It is a volume of extremely rare occurrence, as the greater part of the impression was consumed in the great fire of London, in 1666" (Horne, 106). Darlow & Moule 5132. Expert repair to joints. An extremely good copy of this exceptionally rare Hebrew New Testament.
