First edition, sixth impression, inscribed by Wilder to his friend Monroe Wheeler: "For Monroe, with the best wishes of his friend. Thornton." Wheeler, former director of Exhibitions and Publications at the Museum of Modern Art, and his lifelong companion, Glenway Wescott, a writer and past President of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, were friends of Wilder for many years. The Cabala, Wilder's first book and a critical and popular success, ``is a gracefully written and deftly ironic novel, concerning the sophisticated but decaying Italian nobility of the post-World War I period.''
