Special deluxe edition of this children's classic, with 14 vibrant mounted color plates by Maria L. Kirk. Since the late 19th century, Pinocchio has been among the most beloved of all children's stories. It first appeared as a serial in Italian between July 1881 and January 1883 and then was published in book form under the title Le Avventure di Pinocchio in 1883. In 1892, it first saw publication in English and achieved almost instant success. "Italy... gave to the world a book so universal in its appeal as to necessitate mention whenever fantasies for children are discussed" (Meigs, 373-4). This beautiful deluxe edition features over a dozen illustrations by Philadelphia-born children's book illustrator Maria L. Kirk, known for her affinity for rich colors and use of painting as a preferred medium. Early gift inscription. Book fine, a bit of wear and soiling to box. A lovely copy.
