JEST AND EARNEST. A COLLECTION OF ESSAYS AND REVIEWS
Chapman and Hall London 1873 1st edition. 2 volumes. 8vo. (7-1/4 x 5 inches). Handsomely bound in 3/4 dark green leather with marbled covers and endpapers. Born in the West Indies and educated in England, George Dasent's (1817-1896) early travels introduced him to Jacob Grimm who fanned the flame of his interest in Scandinavian literature and mythology. A man of letters whose career spanned journalism, academics, civil service, law and writing, Dasent soon became a known scholar of Scandinavian literature and languages. He is best known for translating and writing many Norse and Icelandic tales and semi-autobiographical novels. He numbered John Stuart Mill, Julius Hare, Thackeray, Lord Granville, Matthew Arnold, and Baron Meyer de Rothschild among his friends.
