T. Nelson and Sons London 1853 Small 8vo. (7-1/4 x 4-3/4 inches); 482 pages + publishers catalog dated 1854 at rear. Original bright blue boards (a little worn) decoratively stamped in blind with gilt lettering on front cover and spine. Lettering and gilt illustration of native peoples on spine is rubbed and faded. Illustrated with frontis and extra engraved title page, 2 text maps, text illustrations, nice folding map and 8 engraved plates with tissue guards. A few pages are chipped in the margins. Includes a chapter on boat and steam-ship explorations in the West; the chapter on Duncan, Richardson and the French; the chapter on exploration in the basin of the Upper Nile; and the chapter on recent discoveries in the East and South including the social condition of Africa; none of which were included in earlier printings.
