BAILLIE, Joanna

A SERIES OF PLAYS IN WHICH IT IS ATTEMPTED TO DELINEATE THE STRONGER PASSIONS OF THE MIND: EACH PASSION BEING THE SUBJECT OF A TRAGEDY AND A COMEDY. (3 Volumes)

Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, (n.d., not before 1821) London Modern half cloth with black marbled sides and blue, red and black marbled edges; leather title labels on spines, some a bit chipped. Joanna Baillie, Scottish poet and dramatist (1762-1851) had a wide circle of literary friends including Southey, Wordsworth, Scott, Maria Edgeworth, and Lucy Aikin. According to Byron, she was the only exception to his opinion that women could not write tragedy. Light foxing to a few pages, otherwise a very nice set.
