DASENT, G. W
TALES FROM THE FJELD. A SECOND SERIES OF POPULAR TALES, FROM THE NORSE OF P. CHR. ASBJORNSEN
Chapman & Hall London 1874 1st edition. 8vo. (approx. 7-3/4 x 5 inches). Handsomely bound in 3/4 dark green leather with marbled boards and endpapers. Spine slightly faded with raised bands and gilt lettering and decoration. Edges slightly rubbed. t.e.g. . Frontis by George Howard. Born in the West Indies and educated in England, George Dasent's (1817-1896) early travels introduced him to Jacob Grimm who fanned the flame of his interest in Scandinavian literature and mythology. A man of letters whose career spanned journalism, academics, civil service, law and writing, Dasent soon became a known scholar of Scandinavian literature and languages. He is best known for translating and writing many Norse and Icelandic tales and semi-autobiographical novels. He numbered John Stuart Mill, Julius Hare, Thackeray, Lord Granville, Matthew Arnold, and Baron Meyer de Rothschild among his friends.
