(A frame tale: ruined by the Civil War, the husband takes to drink. His wife arranges that a group of friends will assemble each evening & tell a story & thus distract hubby from his rum toddies. The loosely -connected stories are quite far-fetched: a young girl's health is ruined by wearing tight corsets; duels, &c, &c.)
