CRAPO, Captain Thomas

Strange, But True. Life and Adventures of Captain Thomas Crapo and Wife.

Capt. Thomas Crapo, c. New Bedford, 1893. Small octavo, with illustrations; a very good copy in theoriginal brown cloth. The short-handed sailor Thomas Crapo enjoyed sudden fame for his gruelling transatlantic crossing in a 19 foot dory, accompanied by his new wife. The seven-week voyage resulted in a publicity and show tour for the couple that lasted several years. Crapo self-published this ghosted autobiography in 1893, and turned eventually to the coastal cargo trade until May 1899 when in an attempt to repeat his former triumphs he left New Bedford in a 9 foot dinghy, bound for Cuba. His body was recovered off Charleston some time later. Mrs C. was left penniless and re-issued her late husband's 'autobiography' to raise funds. The reissue is not identified on the title-page but may be identified by the fact that it ends on p. 151 with Mrs. Crapo's description of his demise. This re-issue is much scarcer than the first edition; this copy was signed on the title-page by Joanna Crapo in 1904.
Forster, 32; Toy, 156.
