OSBECK, Peter

A Voyage to China and the East Indies...

Benjamin White, London, 1771. Two volumes, octavo, with 13 engraved plates (one bound upside down),early ownership inscription on flyleaves; a fine uncut copy in attractive later but old half citron morocco. First edition in English. Osbeck, who had been a pupil of Linnaeus in Sweden, was chaplain on an East Indiaman and a keen observer and recorder of the natural history of the areas he visited. He travelled to Spain, the Canary Islands, and Java before reaching China. In addition to natural history and husbandry, there is much information on the economical and commercial aspects of China, as well as catalogues of the animals and plants to be found there. The work also contains an account of a voyage to Surat by Olof Toreen, who was chaplain aboard a sister ship. The final section of about a hundred pages is "An Account of the Chinese Husbandry" by Charles Eckeberg, captain of a Swedish East Indiaman.

The text was translated from the German by Johann Reinhold Forster, who travelled with his son Georg as naturalists on Cook's second voyage. He dedicated this work to Thomas Pennant.
Cox, I:342; Lust, 350; Morrison, I, 576; Nissen, 3025.
