SPARRMAN, Anders
Voyage au Cap de Bonne-Espérance...
Buisson Paris, 1787. Three volumes, octavo, with a folding chart and 15 engraved folding plates; a fine set in contemporary French quarter calf, flat spines with double labels. An attractive copy of the first octavo edition in French, published simultaneously with the quarto edition. Sparrman, professor of zoology at Uppsala University, was in South Africa when the Resolution and Adventure called in 1772. Johann Reinhold Forster engaged him to accompany the expedition as assistant naturalist. Though most of the account is a narrative of Sparrman's travels in Africa with emphasis on its flora and fauna and containing a remarkable series of plates on termites and their habitations, he includes an interesting account of his voyage with Cook in the first volume.
Sparrman published an expanded version of this voyage in 1802 (with a second volume in 1818) but this account, which was widely read and translated, remains the only eighteenth-century text by this important member of the second voyage.
Beddie, 1280; Kroepelien, 1224; not in Hill.
