CRAPO, Captain Thomas

Strange, But True. Life and Adventures of Captain Thomas Crapo and Wife.

Capt. Thomas Crapo, New Bedford, 1893. Small octavo, with illustrations; a very good copy in the original purple cloth, spine sunned. First edition: the short-handed sailor Thomas Crapo enjoyed sudden fame for his gruelling transatlantic crossing in a 19 foot dory, accompanied by his new wife. The seven-week voyage resulted in a publicity and show tour for the couple that lasted several years. Crapo self-published this ghosted autobiography in 1893, and turned eventually to the coastal cargo trade until May 1899 when, in an attempt to repeat his former triumphs, he left New Bedford in a 9-foot dinghy, bound for Cuba. His body was recovered off Charleston some time later.

Mrs C. was left penniless and six years later re-issued her late husband's "autobiography" to raise funds. The reissue is not identified on the title-page but differs from this first edition by ending on p. 151 with Mrs. Crapo's description of his demise.
Toy, Adventurers Afloat, 156.
