PALMER, Thomas Fyshe
The Trial of the Rev. Thomas Palmer...
W. Skirving, Edinburgh, 1793. Octavo, lacking the frontispiece portrait title dusted, embrowned throughout, a few spots and minor cropping to the lower margin of the first four leaves, but a decent copy in later quarter sheep. Trial of the "Scottish martyr" Palmer, published by Palmer's fellow reformer Skirving himself. This is the later of two issues, having the date of the trial corrected to 1793 on the title, as noted by Ferguson in the National Library copy.
Palmer was sentenced to fourteen years transportation at the celebrated trials for sedition, one of five Scots to meet this fate. With Muir and Skirving he arrived in Sydney aboard the transport Surprise in October 1794. They were generally treated as favoured prisoners, and Palmer, with the support of London sympathisers, engaged in various commercial undertakings. These five men were all political reformers, treated harshly for their involvement in societies aimed to bring about government reforms. "As a group they were perhaps the most notable men ever sent to New South Wales" (Australian Encyclopedia).
