[FAGNAN, Marie Antoinette]

Kanor, conte traduit du Sauvage, par Madame **.

n.p., Amsterdam, 1750. Duodecimo, a very good copy in contemporary French mottled calf, joints neatly repaired; owner's gilt stamp 'Mr. GILLY' on front cover. First edition: a delightful fantasy set in Brazil (but not recorded by Borba de Moraes the bibliographer of Brazil).

Despite her fame as the writer of several volumes of fairy tales and fables, little is known about Fagnan's life beyond the fact that she died in France around the year 1770. Kanor purports to be a translation from an ancient and very rare manuscript, chronicling two tribes living on the banks of the Amazon, and their tribulations when the Kanor people fantastically shrink to a uniform six inches, and the Alzopha grow to eight or nine feet. Unexpectedly, they all live happily ever after, and Fagnan allows herself the luxury of a moral: 'le veritable Amour fait des miracles'.
Barbier, II, p. 1061; not in Borba.
