Rélation Véritable de ce qui s'est Passé au Royaume de Sophie...
Charles de Sercy, Paris, 1659. Duodecimo, slightly browned but a very good copy in contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt between raised bands. Very scarce: first edition of this description and history of an imagined kingdom, an allegorical satire on French court and society.
Sorel (1597-1674) novelist and historian, wrote a vast array of works, many issued anonymously or pseudonymously: he 'professa toute sa vie pour les lettres une ardeur indefatigable' (NBG). This tremendous output has made a complete bibliography of his works a difficult undertaking, but even a brief overview shows his astonishing diversity: satires, histories, fables, etc. The Rélation Véritable is a satire on French mores, followed by Sorel's Discours sur la Nouvelle Allégorique, an approving comparison of Sorel's invented kingdom of Sophie and Antoine Furetière's earlier Nouvelle Allégorique, ou Histoire des derniers troubles arrivez au royaume de l'eloquence.
