LAWRENCE, Sir Thomas

Sir Joseph Banks, Bart. K.B.

Engraved for the Naturalist's Library, circa Edinburgh, 1835. Engraving, 160 x 100 mm.; in good condition. An attractive and well-executed portrait of Sir Joseph Banks, engraved by William Home Lizars.

As the full caption here suggests, this portrait was engraved for the Naturalist's Library, an important series of books published by Sir William Jardine in Edinburgh. Jardine's series not only included descriptions and figures of a vast array of natural history subjects, each of the volumes was preceded by a significant memoir of a famous naturalist, complete with their portrait. The portrait of Banks here was likely based on one of the original paintings by Thomas Phillips, and appeared as the frontispiece to The Natural History of the Fishes of the Perch Family... with Memoir and Portrait of Sir Joseph Banks, Bart.
Not in Nan Kivell & Spence.
