WAGSTAFF, Charles Edward (engraver)

William Mackenzie, n.d., circa Glasgow & Edinburgh, 1835. Engraving, 138 x 107 mm.; fine. A very good engraved portrait of Banks, based on the famous painting by Thomas Phillips commissioned by the Royal Society.
Perhaps the most famous of the images depicting Banks in his later life, this portrait shows him as the stately doyen of natural history and President of the Royal Society. His award of the Order of the Bath, given to Banks for increasing Britain's scientific, imperial and commercial reputation, is here being worn proudly.
Phillips painted his first major portrait of Banks in 1810, but it was considered so successful that he was later approached by other groups interested in having a portrait of their own. However, none of the small number of portraits he would do of Banks are simple copies: for instance, it is interesting to note that here the phrase "Nullius in Verba" is inscribed on the back of the chair: this is the motto of the Royal Society, so Phillips had evidently updated his portrait.

All items are guaranteed as described. If an item is not as described, it is returnable within seven days of receipt, unless other arrangements are made. Full refunds are given only when items are received in the same condition in which they were sent.
