Adolf Bonnier, Stockholm, 1854. Two volumes in one, octavo, with three folding tinted maps, and 20 lithographs (18 coloured) and numerous woodcuts; an extremely good copy in the original brown cloth, gilt. First edition: the official account of the voyage of the Eugenie, the first Swedish circumnavigation, with particularly good accounts of the expedition's stops in Honolulu, Tahiti, San Francisco, Sydney and Manila, and shorter notices on various South American ports, the Galapagos, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Cape of Good Hope. The plates include four of Tahiti, three of Hawaii, two of Manila and a view of Mission Dolores, San Francisco. These coloured lithographs are both naïve and attractive. The book was also published in German in 1856, but no edition in English appeared until a translation of the important Hawaiian portion of the narrative by Meiric Dutton was issued in 1954.

Forbes has a long article on the important narrative of the Honolulu visit which includes a good account of the town and harbour, and numerous social engagements including a meeting with the king and Saturday horseracing, as well as a trip into the countryside including a visit to the Pali.

'Skogman's little known narrative tells of the Royal Swedish voyage... [The] work is much sought after because of its fine colour plates. In the appendices is a section on whaling in the Pacific Ocean...' (Hill). Despite the substantial Australian section, the book is not recorded by Ferguson.

Peter Howard, the Berkeley bookseller, has pointed out that 'the Voyages of the Frigate Eugenie in some way paralleled the trips of the Adventurer. They had only one port stop in common, however - Port Famine at the tip of South America. Wherein lies one of the most baffling of Lepidoptera problems.

'The collecting habits of scientists on the Eugenie in two generalized pages record the fact that from Hawaii was brought home what proved to be Colias Sponteni. The Adventurer gathered in South America the same blue butterfly, Colias Imperialis.

'Between the two ships, ten specimens were collected. No other sighting in South America of Colias Imperialis [Sponteni] has ever been recorded. The morphology of Colias Imperialis is not suitable to southern South America. One private scholar has spent over $50,000 in pursuit of a scientific solution to the problem. I am indebted to the University of California at Davis scientist Arthur Shapiro for every bit of this knowledge. He has swept the plains of South America for decades, looking for a single Colias Imperialis. The number of specimens gathered by the Adventurer is proof that the bug bred there, he insists...'.
