MEREDITH, Mrs. (Louisa Anne)
Grandmamma's Verse-Book for Young Australia. Part I.
Printed for the Author, Tasmania, 1878. Octavo, [viii], 56 pp.; original red cloth-backed printed white papered boards, all edges red. First edition and rare. Published by Mrs Meredith herself, only part I ever appeared.
Louisa writes in the Preface: 'I am not aware that any attempt has heretofore been made to provide Australian children with simple rhymes on local subjects...'. In so doing she made available the first opportunity for young Australians to celebrate in verse their own familiar birds and animals.
The poems include "The Bower-Bird's Song", "Wattle-Birds in Gum-Trees", "The Giant Beans of Queensland", and "The Waratah (of New South Wales)".
'A poet in feeling, an artist by instinct, a naturalist by force of circumstance, a keen botanist and an ardent lover of landscape scenery' (Douglas Pike, historian), Louisa Anne Meredith was a most influential writer and illustrator in Australia during the nineteenth century.
Miller, p. 230; Muir, 4974; Serle, p. 135.
