HOWITT, Samuel
A New Work of Animals: Principally Designed from the Fables of Aesop, Gay, and Phaedrus.
Edward Orme, London, 1818. Quarto, 100 engraved plates; a fine, remarkably fresh copy in very handsome contemporary straight-grained morocco, gilt, inner gilt dentelles, all edges gilt. A handsomely-bound large paper copy of this classic work, in which Howitt's superb animal studies bring to life the classic fables of Aesop and Phaedrus, and the poetry of Gay.
Samuel Howitt (c.1765-1822) first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1785, and went on to establish a formidable reputation - perhaps second only to George Stubbs - for his accurate and lively depictions of natural history and sporting subjects. As well as being a most accomplished painter, he was also a master etcher and he personally executed the finely-worked plates for this and his many other publications.
The fables of Aesop - each of which has a strong moral, or "application" as it is called here - were very popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Countless editions were published for children. Such a sophicated edition as this displays in the very best manner the beautiful etchings of a master of this art form.
