ROUPPE, Ludovici

De Morbis Navigantium...

Theodore Haak Leiden, 1764. Octavo, completely uncut; edges rather dust-soiled but a good copy in modern half calf, old library stamp and release stamp on verso of title-page. First edition: an important treatise on the diseases of sailors and their cure.

Rouppe, naval physician and surgeon, had travelled widely in the West Indies aboard the Dutch ship Princesse Carolina, and he based much of this work on observations made during these voyages. He offers a detailed account of the symptoms and treatment of many of the illnesses which were common amongst sailors, including an extended section on the vexed and topical question of scurvy, which would be addressed by Cook in his famous 1776 paper to the Royal Society. Rouppe's work also addresses the sometimes delicate issue of maintaining the health of sailors whilst they are subject to local temptations during stays in port.
